✔️ Mode of Action
Vitamin C is essential for collagen formation and tissue repair. It plays a role in oxidation/reduction reactions and other metabolic pathways, including the synthesis of catecholamines, carnitine, and steroids, and the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid.
✔️ Side Effects:
Generally safe, but mega-doses may cause diarrhea, abdominal bloating, harmful iron over-absorption in patients with thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, and hemochromatosis; hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis in patients with glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Pregnant women taking more than 5 gm/day may suffer fetal abortion.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is an essential nutrient not produced by the body and must be obtained through diet or supplements. It is vital for tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function, enhanced immunity, and healthy gums. As an antioxidant, it protects against pollution and infection, reducing cellular damage. It acts as a coenzyme for wound healing, drug metabolism, and the metabolism of cholesterol and folic acid. Vitamin C supports healthy hair and skin, strengthens the immune system, and maintains overall good health.
✔️ Dosage & Administration
Adult Dose:
- Prevention of Scurvy: 25-75 mg daily. 4 tablets 2-3 times daily.
- Treatment of Scurvy: >250 mg daily, in divided doses. Can be given IM/IV/SC. 250-500 mg IV daily/BID for at least 2 weeks.
- Thalassemia: 100-200 mg daily with desferrioxamine.
- Common Cold: 1 g or more daily, in divided doses, e.g., 4 tablets daily.
- Wound Healing: 2-4 tablets 2-3 times daily.
- Other Conditions: 1-2 tablets daily.
- Stroke Risk Reduction in Elderly: 1-2 tablets daily.
- Effervescent Tablet: 1 tablet daily with a meal or as directed by a physician. Dissolve one tablet in half a glass (100 ml) of water and drink immediately.
Child Dose:
- Children:
- 1 month to 4 years: 125-250 mg daily.
- 4-12 years: 250-500 mg daily.
- 12-18 years: 500 mg to 1 g daily. Doses to be given in 1-2 divided doses.
- Thalassemia:
- 100-200 mg daily with desferrioxamine.
- Metabolic Disorders:
- Neonate: 50-200 mg daily, adjust as needed.
- 1 month to 18 years: 200-400 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses, up to 1 g daily may be needed.
